The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor/Veterinarian, Veterinarian Technologies, Foothill College. 

The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy.  All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean of Health Sciences and Horticulture, the primary role of the fulltime Veterinary Technology Instructor is to teach veterinary technology students on various subjects in lecture and laboratory settings. These veterinary technicians in training must learn both didactic and skills-based information, with an emphasis on critical thinking and clinical application of knowledge. Responsibilities will include demonstrating competency and comfortability teaching lecture and hands-on lab courses with live animals which may include but are not limited to anatomy and physiology, radiology, beginning and advanced nursing skills, anesthesia and surgery, large animal skills, pharmacology, emergency medicine, animal behavior, and other topics. The ideal candidate will have the ability to implement multiple active learning strategies, and the ability to positively interact with a diverse student population using a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lens. The ability to bring real world experiences and techniques into the classroom is expected. The program philosophy is one of collaboration among faculty to teach critical thinking skills in students using multiple modalities in teaching. The program has an animal colony including large and small animals, a clinical laboratory, surgical suite, and a radiology suite with digital x-ray, dental x-ray, and ultrasound. The ideal candidate will be able to transfer veterinary clinical experience to the classroom and help students understand the underlying reasons for their training. The ideal full-time instructor will be comfortable working with faculty RVTs and students to perform and participate in small animal surgery, anesthesia and dentistry and interested in helping to develop the next generation of veterinary nurses.

The secondary role of the Attending Veterinarian is to oversee care of all program animals, including but not limited to creating protocols and providing preventative care of program animals (regular physical examination, maintenance of records, parasite control, communication with shelter as to patient health and planning.) The attending veterinarian will:

  • Respond to any health or behavioral concerns from students, faculty, or members of the public and will create action plans to address/treat the concerns;
  • Be responsible for DEA and USDA Compliance which includes holding the DEA license for program, controlled drug ordering and reverse distribution, and compliance with the Animal Welfare Act;
  • Be responsible for writing or reviewing IACUC protocols as needed;
  • Act as liaison with the USDA veterinarian and is responsible for all USDA communications;
  • Maintain the premise license through the Veterinary Medical Board and participate in program specific committees and regulatory compliance (Advisory Board, IACUC, USDA, CVTEA, California VMB);
  • Work with the program director and full-time faculty to oversee students’ care of animals. This includes taking student communications regarding animal wellbeing on weekends and holidays.
  • Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also can serve on district and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities and outreach. We are looking for a dynamic educator who is sensitive to students’ different learning styles and educational needs.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff. 
  • Any bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
  • Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master’s degree. The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment.
  • Valid California State license as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor (DVM or VMD).
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 6 years of in-clinic experience ending within the past two years.

    HIRING RANGE:  $79,128.39 - $146,897.96  annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant’s verified education and experience.
