About us

Research in the Department of Surgical and Interventional Engineering within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences focuses on developing robotic systems for minimally invasive surgeries. We have excellent facilities for conceptualising and developing early stage technology, and supporting it towards clinical translation and commercialisation.

About the role

The Robotics and Vision in Medicine lab is seeking motivated and experienced researchers to undertake activities in the domain of Physically and Artificially Intelligent Surgical Robots. Depending on their background and aspirations, the successful applicants will focus on soft robot design, engineering, and control for endoluminal interventions, or software development for surgical robot autonomy. The post holders will contribute to the lab’s endeavours to create everting robots for intraluminal interventions and therapy delivery, continuum robots for vitreoretinal surgery, and (semi)autonomous surgical assistance for instrument and laparoscope docking. 

This is a full time post, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for a year, with possibility of extension to 2 years or more depending on performance and funding.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD qualified in relevant subject area (or pending results)* 
  2. Excellent knowledge of robot kinematics and dynamics 
  3. Excellent knowledge of mechanical design or software development 
  4. Excellent knowledge of MATLAB and/or Simulink, or ROS 1.0 / 2.0. 
  5. Knowledge of soft/rigid robots and their mechanical properties. 
  6. Track record of publications at conferences and journals.
  7. Track record of delivering research presentations.

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

Desirable criteria

  1. Lab experience.
  2. Experience with soft robotics.
