GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

 

In support of the two practicum courses taught at Stanly Community College, the Practicum Observation Instructor will conduct a minimum of four (4) observations of assigned students enrolled in the Spring and Fall semesters and conduct a conference with students after each observation providing feedback and additional resources to enhance teaching practices. Observation visits will be virtual or in-person. This position requires excellent communication and writing skills and attention to detail. The Practicum Observation Instructor will serve as a mentor to the student(s) in classroom best practices. This position reports to the Practicum Coordinator of the Early Childhood Department.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:
  • Master’s Degree in Early Childhood or Child and Family Development from a regionally accredited school.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in observing, coaching, and mentoring student teachers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, and Outlook)
 

Preferred:
  • Minimum of 2 years’ EDU Community College teaching experience
  • Familiarity with Canvas or other Learning Management systems

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Conduct a minimum of four (4) observations per assigned student(s) (more observations may be needed based on student needs)
    • All visits for EDU 184 students – 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours (varies on the student)
    • First 3 visits for EDU 284 student - 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours (varies on student)
      • Final visit for EDU 284 student – 2 – 3 hours (varies on the student)
  • Conference with students after each visit
    • Review the observation rubric and the grade assigned to the student.
    • If the student can conference after the visit and coverage is available to do in a separate room, conduct immediately following the visit.
    • If the student does not have coverage to meet with you, the following are options.
      • Conduct a phone conference (in which both of you have copies of the grading rubric).
      • Conduct a video conference during the student’s lunch break or during children’s nap time (if allowed by the center)
      • Conduct a video or phone conference in the evening after the student is off work.
  • All observation documentation, including the grading rubric, notes taken during the observations, and supporting resources provided to the student must be sent to the Practicum Coordinator no later than two days following the observation.
  • Check Canvas for your assigned student communications (all discussions, reflection journals and assignments for knowledge on how to best support your students. (Example: Student shares in their introduction discussion they love to teach but you observe them using ditto sheets or having unrealistic expectations – having children sit for long periods of time instead of being actively engaged. This is your opportunity to share resources and feedback to scaffold their learning.)
  • Provide a way for students to contact you immediately if they will not be at their practicum site for illness or any other reason before you show up. Most instructors give a cell phone number, but you can also use a Google Voice number.
  • Communicate with Practicum Coordinator regarding student concerns or issues that arise.
  • Technology skills (ex. combine various software into one document and accurate monthly excel timesheets).

JOB TRAINING:
Required Position Training to be completed in the first year of hire:
  • Beginning of Semester review of responsibilities with Practicum Coordinator
  • End of Semester debriefing with Practicum Coordinator
  • Annual Mandatory training provided by the college (first three modules)
