Job Description


The Institute for International Programs at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is a network of scientists focused on improving the quality of information available to support public health policies and decision making in maternal and child health and nutrition across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)


We seek a Research Program Coordinator to support several research studies focused on improving maternal and child nutrition and health outcomes in LMICs. This include, but are not limited to, a cohort study examining adherence to antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) in Ethiopia, an implementation research-focused MMS study in Afghanistan, and a mixed-methods study to understand the determinants of maternal and child wasting in Ethiopia.


You will provide project coordination and technical assistance to a body of work that aims to directly inform nutrition-related policy and programming in the countries where the work is being undertaken. This will include elements of study design, the provision of technical assistance during study implementation, supporting data analysis, and disseminating research findings. This role will involve direct engagement with government, development, and academic partners in LMICs (e.g., Ethiopia and Afghanistan) and development of global public goods for wider audiences (e.g. technical notes, guidance documents, frameworks or tools, and multi-country publications). You will also actively engage colleagues and partners working on related studies for the purpose of learning and collaboration.


You will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and co-investigators to refine and implement the study vision, goals, and objectives. You are responsible for coordinating cross-partner workflows, responding to donor and other requests for information, supporting research-focused tasks (e.g., drafting key informant interview guides, data cleaning/management, etc.), and supporting development of global public goods.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Program/Project Management (50%)

  • Participate in strategic planning and direction setting, lending your unique perspective and expertise to development of study-specific objectives and activities.
  • Develop and manage cross-partner workplans to guide study implementation and support the PI in management of JHU-led workflow.
  • Guide evaluation teams to achieve high-quality project deliverables and ensure they meet project objectives and donor requirements. Evaluate progress through check-ins and progress reports.
  • Facilitate intra-partner knowledge sharing and help identify opportunities to maximize efficiency and performance; identify areas of project implementation weakness and enacts new strategies and techniques to strengthen areas.
  • Prepare and disseminate program-related reports (e.g. meeting reports, annual reports to funders). This includes tracking all reporting requirements and deadlines; coordinate actors engaged in reporting; and prepare and/or coordinate responses to special donor requests.
  • Interact with core partners and assist with development of contract deliverable schedules and scopes of work, and other documents necessary to secure approval and execute awards. Once awarded, track progress and coordinate technical updates to ensure invoice payment.
  • Engage with internal and external subject matter experts to solicit timely technical support as needed.
  • Coordinate and co-facilitate regular meetings of country teams, core partners and global technical staff.
  • Engage with JHU Finance Team in budget development, financial tracking, and financial reporting. Advise PI concerning major expenditures, spending priorities, and planning.


Technical Support (40%)

  • Work closely with JHBSPH faculty and core partners to ensure they have resources for effective design and planning, implementation, monitoring and documentation; connect the team to additional support, resources, and experts, as needed.
  • Coordinate activities such trainings, webinars, stakeholder meetings, and workshops.
  • Support data management and data analysis activities.
  • Prepares documentation for IRB submissions.


Communication and Knowledge Management (10%)

  • Assist with the development of proposals, briefs, and other global public goods to be shared with internal and external audiences.
  • Design and deliver presentations at workshops, conferences, and working groups. Assist PI in preparation of presentations for diverse audiences including donors, implementing partners and various committees and working groups.
  • Coordinate editing, layout, and/or translation support as required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health plus at least 3 years of relevant work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Specific technical expertise and training experience in relevant areas such as public health nutrition, public policy, program evaluation, or related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the synergy between the programmatic, operational, and financial components of public health initiatives.
  • Data analysis and literature review experience.
  • Project management experience including development and tracking of work plans, financial management and stakeholder coordination.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Experience translating complex technical material and research findings into dissemination-friendly formats.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and social-emotional intelligence; experience working with cross-cultural teams. Experience working with a range of in-country partners, including government, implementing partners and local organizations in LMICs is strongly preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work under pressure with a positive attitude, as a part of a matrixed global team.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, assume responsibility for work, and follow tasks through to completion.
  • Availability to travel internationally 20-25%.
