Landscape Worker

Job Description

LANDSCAPE WORKER, Department of Facilities Grounds Services, to be responsible for the general care and maintenance of all the grounds at the Institute.  Will operate handheld tools and walk behind tools such as chain saw, brush chipper, bobcats, front-end loaders, large trucks, forklifts, sod cutters, street sweeper, walk behind aerators and all other required Grounds Department equipment. Plow and shovel snow. Setup, operate and monitor the irrigation system. Remove trash, litter and leaves. Removes any material that could create a tripping hazard or pose other safety risks. Prune and perform other higher-level tasks under the direction of a Gardner. Mow and water lawn, edge and mulch. Water trees and shrubs, weed Apply fertilizer; install sod, plant lawns, flowers, trees and shrubs. Maintains hardscape including power washing and cold patching. Receive work order assignments, pick up and select materials and complete tasks accurately with written comments provided on work orders upon completion.

 

Job Requirements:
REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent. Driver’s License, Driver’s Medical Certificate, Hoisting License 1C, and Hoisting License 2B.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Working conditions include ascending/descending stairs, traversing the campus, moving about the jobsite and machinery to access equipment, and/or remaining stationary for extended periods of time.  Work from ladders and scissor lifts.   May be asked to use articulating lift on a voluntary basis. Work is regularly performed outdoors during all seasons and all types of weather conditions.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and High Visibility Clothing must be worn as required by the needs of the specific job assignment.

Employees in this position are considered essential personnel in accordance with the MIT Policy on Emergency Closing or Early Release. During emergencies, employees in this job title are excused from their regularly scheduled work only with the specific authorization of their supervisors, regardless of any public announcement that the Institute is closed.
