Lifeguard (Temporary-Professional Expert)

Job Description

DESCRIPTION

Professional Expert – Temporary, Short-Term Assignment: Under the direction of Dean of Instruction for Kinesiology and Athletics ensures safety of swim class students by preventing and responding to emergencies.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Scans the area of surveillance to make sure students are safe and behaving in accordance to the rules.
  • Responds to emergency situations by providing rescue and first aid assistance up to his/her training level until medical personnel arrive.
  • Inspects the aquatic area for unsafe conditions and cleanliness to prevent accidents and reports any hazards to the supervisor.
  • Enforces rules consistently and fairly
  • Fills out reports for incidents or other records for reference.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and one year experience acting as in the capacity of a lifeguard.


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • First aid
  • AED/CPR
  • Lifeguard Certification

 

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

  • Terminology, methods, practices, and techniques in acting as a lifeguard.
  • Appropriate backstage health, safety, and operational standards.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Renew required certifications when they expire
  • Stay fit to perform job adequately which requires swimming endurance and strength
  • Maintain a professional appearance
  • Interact politely with faculty, staff and students

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Excellent swimmer
  • Ability to exert physical effort, such as walking, climbing, standing, reaching, pulling, lifting 50 lbs., bending and twisting.
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception for communicating with others.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed indoors in pool area. Some lifeguards may be required to work evenings.

    4. Typing certifications must be current within one year and must include name, date and net words per minute (NWP).
    5. For those disciplines with established Academic Senate’s approved equivalency: complete the Supplemental Equivalence Request form (If applicant is applying based on an equivalency and is requesting review)
  • Applicants may be subject to passing an examination (written/technical), as appropriate to the requirements of the position. 
  • Residency within a reasonable geographical area of the college may be necessary.
  • Travel expenses for pre-employment interviews and employment processing will not be authorized.
