Basic Function/Definition

The incumbent will interpret and/or translate educational and general information exchanged primarily in the educational setting by using manual and oral methods of communication for D/deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) students and/or faculty and hearing parties. This is a continuous recruitment to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the pool of applicants on file to fill temporary assignments as needed. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department or division be interested in scheduling an interview. This position may perform work in any of the following departments: Communications & Languages and Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS).

Essential Duties

Examples of Duties:

  • Attend classes lectures, workshops, meetings, and other events as needed with DHH students or faculty to interpret/translate academic and non-academic information.
  • Attend classes, guidance sessions, tutoring sessions, and other student activities as needed with DHH students/faculty to interpret/translate academic and non academic information, classroom discussions, and activities as well as ancillary communication which support the college going experience through the use of manual and oral methods of communication
    for the deaf. Continually assess a student’s communication skills in speech, speechreading, sign and fingerspelling in order to adapt effective communication methods based on student’s needs.
  • Promotes cross-cultural communication through an understanding of the Deaf culture.
  • Support full interaction and independence of DHH students.
  • Stays current in the field of professional interpreters (i.e., workshops, continuing education units, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications/Education and Experience

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED AND
  • Completion of an associate degree from an accredited college in a related field of study, or a minimum of twenty (20) units of accredited college-level courses and documentation of continuing education units from a professional interpreting maintenance program.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

Credentials

  • Recognized Sign Language certification/ license, certificate of completion from at least one of the following:
    1. National Interpreter Certification (NIC);
    2. National Association for the Deaf (NAD) level III or above;
    3. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate of Interpretation (CI)/ Certificate of transliteration (CT)
    4. Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP Certificate) from an accredited college.

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of paid experience at the college level interpreting/ transliterating classes of a complex nature.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program.

Position Description

  • The ASL Interpreters who interpret for Deaf faculty will voice the instruction of Deaf instructors to hearing students, and interpret
    English to Deaf instructors (ie, classroom,
    department meetings, professional
    development activities, etc.)
  • ASL Interpreters who interpret for Deaf
    students will interpret and/or translate educational and general information exchanged primarily in the educational setting by using manual and oral methods of communication for D/deaf and Hard- of-Hearing (DHH) students and hearing parties.
  • Interpreter I: Evaluated as qualified with a functional range of signed languages; 3+ years’ experience in higher education; and, awareness of a variety of interpreting models.
  • Interpreter II: Evaluated as qualified with a proficient range of signed languages; 4+ years’ experience in higher education; and, ability to apply a variety of interpreting models depending on need.
  • Interpreter III: Evaluated as qualified with an advanced range of signed languages; 5+ years; Experience in higher education; Ability to apply a variety of interpreting models depending on need; and, current RID, NAD, EIPA 4.0, and/or verified history of providing interpreting services in professional, complex, academic settings
