The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the three largest colleges at NC State University in terms of student headcount. The mission of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is to serve the residents of North Carolina and meet the challenges of the 21st century by educating our students to be future leaders and responsible citizens with a distinctive willingness to engage in the life of their communities, their state, and their nation.
The college offers baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees in a wide range of traditional and professional disciplines; it serves business, industry, government, public education, and individual citizens of the state through teaching, research, and engagement. These programs are carried out in ten academic units. Each functional area is funded by combinations of state appropriations, public and private contracts and grants, miscellaneous gifts and receipts, and sales and service receipts. Currently, the college employs 209 tenured/tenure track faculty, 235 professional track faculty, 95 staff, and 345 graduate teaching and research assistants. The college has 147
endowments with a total market value of $39.3 M and private fundraising $9.6 M. Annual expenditures exceed $73 million for all funding sources. The college’s research is supported by a 5-year average of $6 million in annual grant and contract funding.

- 17 Masters programs, 5 Ph.D. programs, and five graduate certificate programs.
- More than 4,600 college students; about 81% undergraduates and 19% graduate students.
- Every NC State undergraduate student takes general education classes in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Essential Job Duties
The Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, reporting to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, serves as a key member of the Dean’s leadership team, creating academic pathways for success for both undergraduate and graduate students while maintaining best practices in curricular policies and procedures across the college. The position requires UNC system level familiarity of academic policies, rules and regulations that impact the College.

Academic Programs and Student Success
- Bringing leadership and vision to support departments in sustaining and developing academic programs (e.g., majors, minors, certificates, and other possibilities such as microcredentials, etc.)
- Directing the development of undergraduate and graduate academic policies and procedures.
- Overseeing the team who directs undergraduate operations in the college.
- Managing graduate operations in the college, including graduate program recruitment, enrollment, student funding, exceptions to graduate school policies, and degree completion; serving as the point of contact for directors of graduate programs in the college.
- Providing data-driven support for academic decision making at the department or college level.
- Providing leadership and guidance for the implementation of UNC System-level policies and NC State policies, rules, and regulations (PRRs) that impact academic (faculty and student) affairs
- Providing vision for CHASS signature scholars’ programs (e.g., dean’s scholars, impact scholars, scholars network).
- Providing college-level leadership in postvention processes.
- Bringing vision and oversight for the College’s implementation of High-Impact Practices (HIP) in alignment with the university’s current Quality Enhancement Plan.
Enrollment Management
- Leading enrollment management and enrollment planning processes at the college level.
- Reviewing and gathering data relevant to college-level enrollment goals.
- Collaborating with the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs and Student Affairs and department leaders to set and achieve enrollment targets.
Accreditation, Assessment, and Program Reviews
- Supervising undergraduate and graduate program assessment.
- Directing college-level accreditation processes and compliance.
- Serving as the college-level leader for program reviews of academic departments and majors.
- Supporting department-level accreditation processes (where applicable) and overseeing college participation in university accreditation.
Recruitment, Retention, and Student Engagement
- Providing vision and leadership for recruitment, retention, and student engagement initiatives, including first-year experiences, to support student success across the college.
- Building and overseeing external collaborations that support recruitment, retention, and student engagement; supporting departments in building pipelines with relevant external constituents.
- Overseeing the evaluation and assessment of recruitment, retention, and engagement activities
College and University Collaborations
- Representing the college in graduate and undergraduate academic affairs initiatives and events across the university.
- Partnering with other colleges and associate deans to develop and manage curricular collaboration and interdisciplinary student success initiatives.
- Serving on the University Associate Deans Council, Graduate Operations Council, Administrative Board of the Graduate School, and academic affairs-related ad hoc or special committees as needed
- Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Financial Administration and Assistant Dean for Human Resources Administration in the College on management and forward planning of capital resources.
- Working with the Executive Director of Development for donor relations to support academic and curricular initiatives.
Team Management and Leadership
- Leading the academic and student affairs team.
- Supervising the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Program and Student Success and the Executive Assistant of Academic and Student Affairs.
- Supporting academic and student affairs leaders with supervisory responsibilities for the Director of Student Recruitment, Retention and Engagement, Director of Student Success, Student Services Specialist, and Administrative Support Associate.
Other Responsibilities
The Associate Dean participates in the college leadership team, representing the college at university and public functions, and may serve as the acting dean.
Minimum Education and Experience
Requires doctoral degree in Humanities or Social Sciences field, or an equivalent degree, and a record that qualifies for the rank of Professor

- Ability to provide a visionary, values-driven approach to administration and college leadership.
- Evidence of collaborative leadership in educational settings.
- Significant experience and demonstrable skills in leading and managing progressive change in complex environments such as those that exist within a modern land-grant university.
- Deep understanding of current and emerging challenges and opportunities in the humanities and social sciences, locally (within the UNC System) and nationally.
- Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication skills, both with internal and external audiences (e.g., promoting a supportive and collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and students; engaging collaboratively with college and university-level leadership).
- Ability to serve as ombudsperson for internal and external clientele, troubleshooting and resolving complex matters on behalf of the Dean.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated experience leading administrative processes and with team management and leadership.
- History of administrative experience, including budgetary matters, experience in resource allocation processes, and personnel management.
The position is highly collaborative and requires exceptional interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and discretion.
