Job Summary

The Program in the Environment (PitE) in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan seeks a candidate for a part-time LEO Lecturer Intermittent position to co-teach one of our courses:


ENVIRON 302 - Sustainability and Michigan Athletics


This is a non-tenure track position offered for the Winter 2025 term only.


PitE is an interdisciplinary program that blends foundational knowledge, skills, and practices from natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities/culture towards an integrated analysis of environmental and sustainability issues facing society at all scales and approaches to address and adapt to the associated challenges.

This course offers an introduction to the intersection of sport, sustainability, and consulting. We will start with an overview of multiple frameworks for sustainability assessments in sport - materiality, emissions tracking, reporting, and stakeholder engagement. Then we will focus on various cases of sports organizations working to address sustainability challenges. We will explore what the University of Michigan has done with respect to sustainability in Athletics and consider future efforts for improvement. Finally, student teams will complete applied projects for focal sports organizations to develop recommendations for more sustainable operations, facilities, and stakeholder engagement. Throughout this course, my goal is to provide students with an understanding of a variety of activities that corporations take to address sustainability challenges with a specific focus on sport, and to help students develop the skills to critically analyze these activities and build recommendations for improvement.

Responsibilities*

Duties and responsibilities for this lecturer position are to work with the other instructor to teach weekly seminars, bridge with external experts, and facilitate team processes and work on projects. 
 

The lecturer will have primary responsibility for grading and feedback on assignments, status updates with teams, and managing Canvas. The lecturer and other instructor will collaborate, in partnership with external experts, to scope group projects, support team dynamics, and shape class lecturers and discussions.
 

The individual would be expected to hold office hours and handle all routine matters related to instruction.  
 

This position requires in-person teaching, remote instruction will not be available. However, office hours can be held remotely.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

All application materials must be submitted no later than December 29, 2024. Selected candidates will be contacted and interviewed remotely after the new year. We expect to make an offer of employment no later than January 7, 2025. The anticipated start date for this position is January 17, 2025. Due to the lateness of this posting actual start date will be after the beginning of term but the appointment will be backdated so it runs with the regular term dates of 1/1/25-4/30/25 as required by the LEO contract.
