Director of Campus Safety
Job Description
SUMMARY:
The Director of Campus Safety provides leadership, vision, and direction to the Campus Safety staff. Responsible for the 24/7 safety and security of the SWC students, staff,
faculty, visitors and all facilities and building.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Success
• Ensure high quality customer service and creates a welcoming environment that assists students in navigating the college’s processes, including resolving billing needs and/or discrepancies.
• Create contemporary, effective interventions and innovations for students and the campus environment.
• Promote, educate and enforce the College’s Drug and Alcohol Prevention
program.
Operational Leadership
• Ensure effective policies and procedures are in place and maintained within a regularly changing business landscape, and according to College standards
• Oversee and educate others about workplace violence, travel security, emergency response and general security awareness
• Direct ongoing threat assessments and investigate breaches or incidents, internal or external.
• Lead emergency or crisis response with excellence as necessary
• Develop and ensure execution of security strategies
• Prepares reports and presentations for college leadership
• Develop and administer the Campus Safety budget; Effectively manage operating expenses
• Advise and assist the President in carrying out the Campus Safety operations.
• Conduct Clery reviews and compliance.
• Partner with appropriate individuals to maintain effective controls over retail theft
• Helps to prevent property loss that may be caused by abuse, freezing, neglect or careless misuse.
• Represent the Sisseton Wahpeton College for court related matters when necessary
• Perform other duties assigned
Strategic Academic Leadership and Direction
• Create and maintain Department Standard Operating Procedures
• Closely monitor industry, regional and other trends and intelligence as well as discreet incidents, to ensure proper preparedness
• Effectively manage a team including: identifying needs, hiring, selection, training, scheduling, and retention
• Integrate appropriate security technology solutions
Staff Development and Support
• Direct a staff and ensures the professional development of leadership team
• Oversee creation and implementation of training program for newly hired Campus Safety personnel
Building Partnerships & Collaboration
• Cultivate strong, effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, and staff.
• Establish and maintain excellent, effective relationships with local and Tribal law enforcement and regulatory agencies that may interact with SWC security operations.
• Interact with faculty, staff, students, and community members to advance the College and promote Dakota values.
• Represent the college at external group meetings on matters related to campus safety.
• Model and ensure very high level of service to both internal and external customers
• Maintain ongoing communication with appropriate members of leadership to facilitate a very
secure environment
• Provide Campus Safety for special events, activities, dorms, and athletic games.
EDUCATION:
• Must possess Associate’s Degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have demonstrated success in leading teams in high-exposure, public-facing, guest service environments
• Must have demonstrated success in managing a broad range of security and securityrelated elements
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality
• Basic computer skills
• Displays high standards of ethical conduct. Exhibits honesty and integrity.
• Works with minimal supervision. Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail.
• Must possess leadership/interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain a work environment conducive to positive morale, employee engagement, respect, open communication and teamwork
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills as appropriate for audience
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must be available to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, and work various hours, to
include evenings and overnight shifts as needed
PREFERRED:
• Bachelor’s Degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• 5 years related experience in a security leadership role
• Demonstrates solid business acumen, to include budgeting, forecasting staffing needs and making high-level business decisions/recommendations in high pressure circumstances
• Must have experience in developing and implementing effective training programs; including written materials and presentation
• CDL license
